Flower Parts

Picture

Most flowers are asexual meening they reproduce without the help of the opposite gender. There are both male and female reproduction parts on the flowers. The male part is called the stamen. Somtimes the stamen is also reffered to as the androecium it has a stalk with an anther on top. The female part is called the pistil or the carpel. There are three parts to one pistil. Those parts are the stigma the style and the ovary. While there are multiple stamen per flower there is only one pistil.

What happens?

When a flower needs to reproduce its the anthers job to produce pollen. Once pollen is produced it needs to be able to land on the stigma. This can happen a couple of ways, a transporter (bees or birds) transfer pollen from one flower to the next or the pollen from the anther falls onto the stigma. On the stigma the pollen germinates and makes its way to the ovary. The ovaries of a flower contain ovules, inside of the ovules are eggs. When the egg becomes fertilized with the polled, the ovary produces a seed, then fruit.
